Best Animation Institute in Kolkata: 8 Things to Check Before You Pay the Fees
Kolkata has no shortage of animation institutes, and every one of them describes itself in more or less the same language. Industry-ready training, expert faculty, placement assistance, modern labs. The words are free. What follows is how to find out whether any of it is true, before the money leaves your account.
1. Look at the Student Work, Not the Promotional Film
This is the place to begin since there is just one question that will differentiate a reputable studio from its competitors in no time at all.
Ask for some reels of last year’s class work. A good studio will be ready to pull them out of a folder and let you see them. A poorer studio will show you the promotional film that they made professionally but does not feature their past classroom experience at all.

2. Find Out Who Is Actually in the Room
Websites list faculty. What matters is the person taking your batch on Monday morning. There are two important factors to consider: the number of years they have been there and whether or not they are still active in the business. An individual who left the field in 2019 has begun teaching a pipeline which has undergone some changes in the meantime. Make sure you find them during your visit.
3. Measure machine time and not class time
Animation is learned through doing things wrong a couple of times. You will require a computer to sit on, not lectures. Some institutes have a way of merging both class and machine times into a single figure to make it appear more impressive. Don’t fall for that trick. Also, check if you can access the lab when you are not in batch sessions. Open lab access is one of the strongest signals of a well-run centre, and it costs them money to offer.
4. Ask for the Batch Cap in Writing
Fifteen students on fifteen machines is a workshop. Twenty-eight students sharing eighteen machines is a waiting room. Animation makes this worse than most subjects, because a render cannot be shared and a simulation ties up a machine for hours. Ask for the maximum batch size, not the intended one, and get it on paper.
5. Check the Software and the Licences
Maya, Houdini, Nuke, Unreal and the Adobe suite are expensive to license properly, which is precisely why some places do not. Ask which versions are installed and whether the licences are current. A slightly older build is a minor issue. Pirated software is a bigger one, and it says plenty about how the centre is run. Also ask what happens when a version updates mid-course. Studios upgrade; classrooms often do not. A curriculum that has not moved in three years is a warning sign in a field where tools shift constantly. Reasonable answers might involve AI-assisted workflows now being taught as production support, or Unreal being added for real-time work, or a compositing module rebuilt around current node-based practice. If the counsellor cannot answer, ask to put the question to a faculty member. This is not an unfair thing to want to know. Each one of these institutes claims to provide placement assistance, but very few give details regarding the same, which often results in disappointments for the student within a year’s time. 8. Get the Total Fee, With Everything In It
Ask for a single number covering course fee, registration, exam charges, certification and any material costs. Then ask directly what is not covered. Get the instalment plan in writing, with dates. EMI is standard across Kolkata now, so there is no reason for it to stay verbal. Budget separately for a personal machine, a drawing tablet and showreel costs near the end. Those are real, and they are rarely mentioned upfront. Take the Demo Class, and Talk to Someone Enrolled
Most centres in Kolkata, MAAC Academy included, run a free demo session. There is no reason to skip it. While you are there, find a current student and talk to them without the counsellor standing nearby. Ask what they would change about the course. That one conversation is worth more than every brochure you will read, because a student halfway through has no reason to sell you anything. Cheaper is not automatically worse. Expensive is not automatically better. What the fee buys is the only thing that matters.
