VFX Artist Salary in India 2026: Fresher to Senior, Role by Role
Ask ten VFX artists what they earn, and you will get ten different answers, most of them useless to you. Pay in this industry is tied to department, studio and showreel far more than to years served. So here is the picture for 2026, broken down by where you actually sit rather than by a single average number. PayScale puts the median VFX artist salary in India at roughly Rs 4 lakh a year. That figure is worth knowing and then setting aside, because almost nobody earns exactly the median. The scale goes from roughly Rs 2.5 lakh at the roto level to Rs 25 lakh for a supervisor. The average of this range represents no one individual in particular.Start With The Average, Then Ignore It
Where Freshers End Up
Freshers’ offers made in 2026 are between Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs 4.5 lakh per annum. The job dictates your exact placement within this range. Roto and paint artist, roughly Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 a month Junior compositor, closer to Rs 25,000 to Rs 45,000 Matchmove and tracking, similar to junior compositing Trainee 3D or lighting artist, usually at the lower end initially Nothing about any of this is glamorous money. This is, though, when you are recognised for your speed and efficiency, and it determines how fast the second number comes around. It is important to mention one point explicitly: those students who come in with a good production-ready showreel end up getting drawn to the higher side of the entry level band.
After Two To Five Years of Experience
This is the point at which the trend changes. Mid-level artists usually make between Rs 5 lakhs and Rs 8 lakhs a year, and a mid compositor working on shots alone can be making anything between Rs 50,000 and Rs 85,000 per month. By now you are no longer executing someone else's setup. You take a shot from plate to final, argue about it in review, and fix it without hand-holding. Artists who specialise here move faster than those who stay general. A composer who also knows Houdini, or a lighting artist comfortable with Nuke, becomes harder to replace. Anyone with a good six years' experience can earn up to 20 lakh per year for specialists and supervisory roles. Senior compositor, roughly Rs 90,000 to Rs 1,50,000 a month VFX lead, around Rs 1,20,000 to Rs 2,00,000 VFX supervisor, Rs 2,00,000 upward, though this usually needs a decade Supervision is not the only route up. Plenty of senior artists earn just as well by going deeper into one department rather than managing people.Senior, lead and supervisor
Which department pays best?
FX is the honest answer. Houdini-based FX technical directors earn Rs 8 lakh to Rs 20 lakh at mid to senior level, and the reason is simple: supply and demand. Procedural simulation for fire, water, smoke and destruction is Python-heavy and slow to learn. Few artists stay with it long enough to get good, so those who do get paid for the scarcity. Rough ranking by pay, mid-career: FX technical director, highest of the specialist tracks Senior compositor, close behind and far more numerous Lighting and look development 3D modelling and texturing Matchmove, roto and paint at the entry end of the scale Matte painting sits slightly outside this list. It pays well at senior level, but the roles are few, and it demands genuine painting skill alongside 3D awareness.
What actually moves your number
Software range, since knowing Nuke, Maya and Houdini opens more doors than any one of them alone Showreel quality, which recruiters look at before your resume Studio size, as facilities on international work pay noticeably more than domestic-only houses City, where Mumbai leads as most major studios are based there. Willingness to specialise rather than remain a generalist for five years. Point about the showreel is important to mention again. Four good shots will be more helpful for landing a job than a certificate in your application.
Freelance And Foreign Assignments
Independent artists working for foreign studios, mostly UK and Australia-based projects, charge in the range of 20 - 50 per hour, depending on their portfolios. That looks enormous next to a salaried figure, and it can be. It also comes without paid leave, without pipeline support and without a guaranteed next month. Most people in this field have worked a number of salaried years before. It is less expensive to learn the pipeline while getting paid than learning while sending out bills.
Does AI change maths?
A fair question to ask in 2026. The generative tools have learned some of the clean-up and rough-out work, particularly rotos. What has not changed is the top of the pipeline. Simulation, look development, and final compositing still need someone who can judge a shot, and studios pay for that judgement. The practical takeaway is to move past task-level work quickly. Entry roles remain a way in, but they are a worse place to sit for four years than they used to be.
Getting in from Kolkata
You do not need to relocate to start. Studios recruit on reel quality, and remote work has widened the field considerably. What you do need is training that puts you on production software rather than a general design curriculum. A structured VFX course in Kolkata that ends with a finished reel gives you something concrete to send out. Then apply widely, take the roto job if that is the offer on the table, and treat the first two years as paid practice.
One Disclaimer, However, That Needs To Be Put Forward
Salaries in this field are very sporadic. The salaries quoted here are based on small numbers; film studios do not reveal salary bands, and salaries in Mumbai will be different from those in Kolkata for the same position. Take each salary band here as a route, not a guarantee. What is common to all of it is that salary is proportional to demonstrated skills, and demonstrated skills here mean visible on-screen skills.
